Placename

Gaelic name: Salachar / Seileachar (?)

Name in Original Source: Salacher

English meaning: Willowy place

Placename feature: Township

Notes: The willowy place is the name of what was a small farm settlement at one time, on the west of the Applecross peninsula, approximately one mile south of the township of An Lòn Bàn. This name appears in an undated list compiled by Kenneth Macrae F.S.A. Scot., (1903-1982) and held by the Applecross Historical Society, in which it is interestingly referred to as Sallachy

W. J. Watson's notes: 205: Salachar (final 'a'open), on a small burn; an extension of 'sailech, willow; with meaning 'place of willows'; cf. Croch-ar, place of the gallows; also the common Sallachy. There are, I am told, no willows now.

Map name appears in: NG 65 SE; OS 1880 Sheet XCIA
