Placename
Gaelic name: Suardal
Name in Original Source: Sardle
English meaning: Muddy dale
Placename feature: Settlement
Notes: According to a paper by Applecross historian Kenneth Macrae, F.S.A.S., who died in 1982: Satrell, Sacrell. This is a Norse name. It is now parkland lying between Boradail and Keppach. A burn which runs through it is still called Allt Shardail.

This place is named on an Applecross Estate map of c.1810, confirming Macrae's note. On this map, Sardal is a sweep of cultivated land lying downslope and west of the now-lost township of Ach' a' Choirce. It is below and to the right of the road as one descends past A' Cheapach today. In the north of Scotland, the name can be taken to also mean a grassy valley. The name is originally Norse: svörðr (sward, grassy area) + dalr (dale)
W. J. Watson's notes: 204: Applecross Mains - Of old Borrodale ... Near this appears to have been Sardale, muddy dale.
