Placename

Gaelic name: Sganna Buidhe

Name in Original Source: Sganna Buidhe

English meaning: Yellow block

Placename feature: Rock

Notes: This name was given by Fearchar MacIllFhinnein (email, 10th August 2012), and refers to a rock on which 'crotal', or lichen, was growing. Unfortunately, the lichen was scraped off and has yet to regrow, as it was being used to make dye. According to Roy Wentworth's Gaelic words and phrases from Wester Ross the word sganna is only used in place names to refer to a block of rock, and can be either a masculine or feminine noun; in this case, it is a masculine noun
