Placename

Gaelic name: Sgeir Mhòr Baile a' Mhuilinn

Name in Original Source: Sgeir Mhòr Baile a' Mhuilinn

English meaning: Big skerry of Milltown

Placename feature: Skerry

Notes: Prominent skerry just off the shore of the township of Baile a' Mhuilinn (q.v.) . One day my Donald Cameron (1908-1995) and his brother Ally (1906-1999) were sailing their fishing boat Isa Wood to land in the fog and they passed very close to Sgèir Mhòr Baile a' Mhuilinn. 'Dè fearann a tha sin?' said one of them. 'Sgèir Mhòr Baile a' Mhuilinn!' said Seòras Mòr Baile a' Mhuillinn (George MacDonald) from the shore. This story illustrates how incredibly close they must have come to hitting the rocks.
