Placename

Gaelic name: Sgeir Shalach

Name in Original Source: Sgeir Shalach

English meaning: Dirty reef

Placename feature: Skerry

Notes: Sandy Cameron said that this reef used to be called Sgeir a' Chac (q.v.) by some local fishermen and sailors, giving a more colloquial meaning of 'Shitty reef', indicating that it may be either covered in seabird's droppings, that it is particularly dangerous, or that it had a particular colour at lowtide. It lies off the southernmost point of the west entrance to Loch Toscaig. According to a chart that Rory Cameron found, this reef lies to the North and West of this mark, a way from the shore.

Apparently, in days gone by, sailing boats used to lie waiting in the small bay behind Sgeir Shalach, at anchor, for a helpful wind.
