Placename

Gaelic name: Sgrotan na Bà Duinne

Name in Original Source: Sgrotan na Bà Duinne

English meaning: Shelves of the brown cow [or: Little shelf of the brown cow?]

Placename feature: Rock

Notes: Rev. Dr. Kenneth MacDonald, 29th November 2012, An Àird, Dhubh, mentioned hearing this name from Ruaraidh Ali Bhàin. It is a rock feature, almost like a set of steps or small platforms in cfCreag nan Sgarbh, the rocks bounding the east side of cfPoll Creadha.

Roy Wentworth's Gaelic words and phrases of Wester Ross gives the word sgrota as being a shelf of rock; or even '... a piece or rock partly broken away from a crag, though not completely fallen away.' He gives as an example (pg 680): An Sgrota Gorm - the green shelf - which is a slab or shelf on a sea-cliff near Diabaig which sheep go onto to graze
