Placename
Gaelic name: Sròn na Coit
Name in Original Source: Sròn na Coit
English meaning: Point of the coble
Placename feature: Promontory
Notes: This name refers to the spit of land between the two little bays on the shore immediately south-west of the fank in Cuil Dubh a' Chill(q.v.) The information came from Donald Cameron (15/02/2003) who heard it from Dan McCowan who heard it from Duncan Murchison.

However, Jean Finlayson wrote a list of place names (26/07/2012) for that area which suggested the name should be Sròn a' Choit - the promontory of the boat. Dwelly's Gaelic dictionary defines coitas meaning 1) a small fishing boat or canoe; 2) coracle; 3) punt; 4) hut; 5) quoit; 6) dog-hole. In Wester Ross it seems to generally mean a coble, or flat-bottomed boat. The noun sometimes appears as both a masculine or a feminine noun in some place names. Examples given by Wentworth (2003), 146, include Port a' Choit (port of the coble) and also Sròn na Coit (point of the coble).

A note in a paper by Ian Mackenzie for the Applecross Historical Society suggest that this may be Sròn a' Chait, point of the cat, but this seems less likely given the use and mooring of small boats in the area
