Placename

Gaelic name: Taigh Mhìcheil

Name in Original Source: Taigh Mhìcheil

English meaning: Michael's house

Placename feature: Man-made

Notes: Mìcheal was Michael MacRae from Reauly. He was the grandfather of Murdo Angus Sutherland who wrote a history of Applecross. Michael’s ancestors were Catholics from Barra, and they lived in an upturned boat in Ruigh Aulaidh. There is a mention of this in a letter written by the Kenneth Macrae, F.S.A. Scot., to Donald K. Cameron.

It was used as one element of a fishing mark, as in: 'Tha sinn a’ toirt Pairc Mhìcheil a’ fradharc air Rubha na Fearna.' Information from Sandy Cameron, 16/10/2001
