Placename

Gaelic name: Toraichean Tollach, Na

Name in Original Source: Na Tairacheann Taoloch

English meaning: The bore holes

Placename feature: Land feature

Notes: An English annotation on the Griffin/Beaton map states that this name means'the bore holes'. They appear to be long north-south declivities or hollows, just behind cfAn Dubh-Ghlaic (2). Co-ordinates used are approximate.

This name also appears in an undated list compiled by Kenneth Macrae F.S.A. Scot., (1903-1982) which is held by the Applecross Historical Society, spelt as TorrachaToll. This list runs in splintered sequences so it is hard to place this name accurately, but it definitely appears to refer to the same place.

It could be that this name is a compound of 'toraichean/torachan', from the Gaelic plural for the word 'augur'; and 'tollach', meaning abounding in holes or pits. In other words, the place of many holes
