Placename

Gaelic name: Òb nan Curach

Name in Original Source: Òb nan Curach

English meaning: Pool of the coracles

Placename feature: Inland pool

Notes: Kenneth Macrae, F.S.A., has written that it is unclear if Òb nan Curach was a natural or man-made feature. It refers to the pool where the monks involved in Maelrubha's monastic settlement kept their coracles. It is possibly the marshy area just between the coast road (opened 1976) and the Clachan Manse; or, possibly, the water inlet on the other side of the road at the top of the beach area. The co-ordinates given here reflect the former theory
