Placename

Gaelic name: Poll na Mara

Name in Original Source: Sea Pool

English meaning: Sea Pool

Placename feature: River pool

Notes: This name appears to be from the Victorian period, an era when wealthy landowners from (predominantly) outside the Highlands purchased estates in Scotland. The Sea Pool was a well-known fishing spot close to the mouth of the river and so a staging area for salmon and sea trout, in particular. In a recording made by Ian Fraser for the Scottish Place Name Survey in May 1971, Calum MacLean (Calum a' Mhiseanaraidh) states that in English it is Sea Pool, but 'S e Poll na Mara a their iad ris dha-rìridh. It is therefore unclear if a Gaelic name ever predated the English one. It is unclear whether the exact location of the sea pool is exactly as it was known long ago, as the river may have changed course or deposited silt in different locations. The co-ordinates given here reflect the location as recorded by the Scottish Place Name Survey in May 1971 (PN1971.016B)
