Placename

Gaelic name: Poll Ruaraidh

Name in Original Source: Poll Ruaraidh

English meaning: Ruaraidh's pool

Placename feature: River pool

Notes: There is a note in Gordon Cameron's collection which says 'Lower Toscaig'. Duncan Murchison mentioned it at a Toscaig Common Grazings meeting in February 2012. Phemie Fraser said (3rd August 2012) that it was a river pool which had had its bank built up to prevent the repetition of a flood in Toscaig when the river burst its banks. Although no-one now appears to know who the Ruaraidh the name refers to was, it may be that a man bearing this name was involved in constructing the retaining wall and concrete abutment which help divert the force and flow of the water away from the river bank and lessen the effects of erosion
