Placename
Gaelic name: Port na' Spàinnteach [Port nan Spàinnteach]
Name in Original Source: Port na Spainntich
English meaning: Landing place of the Spaniards
Placename feature: Bay
Notes: This is a small bay on the shore of An Àird Dhubhbelow Kenny MacBeth's house. The name comes from the story that a Spanish ship, or possibly a shipwrecked Spanish sailor, came ashore there. Indeed, one local story suggest that there may have been Spaniards living there. This is a not uncommon tradition throughout the Highlands and Islands; there may be some truth in the story, given that so many Spaniards had been involved in the 1719 Battle of Glenshiel, for example. The name as it is spoken in Applecross, Port na Spainntich, is grammatically incorrect. It should probably be Port nan Spainnteach
