Applecross Placenames Project

Placename

Gaelic name: Raon na h-Àirde Duibhe

Name in Original Source: Raon

English meaning: The plain of the black headland

Placename feature: Field

Notes: Local residents refer to this as An Raon. It would be known in the wider area as Raon na h-Àirde Duibhe to differentiate it from different raointean in the townships of Toghsgaig and Camas Teile. The name was collected by Alison MacLeod for Applecross Historical Society in 2003, and the accompanying note reads: Plain. The croft land behind the Aird-dhubh houses. (Also used in Toscaig for the croft-land between our house and Annbell's.)
