Placename

Gaelic name: Meall na Cathraiche Duibhe

Name in Original Source: Meall a' Chathair Dhuibh

English meaning: Lump of the black settlement

Placename feature: Hill

Notes: Information from Alan Gillies, 1st August 2012. This is a hill above Cuil Dubh a' Chill (q.v.) [Where is An Cathair Dubh?] However, Cathair or Fairy knoll is a feminine noun in most dialects, so does this name mean it is a masculine noun in Applecross Gaelic, or has the name come down in oral tradition in a fashion that renders it grammatically incorrect? Could it actually be Hill/Lump of the black settlement?

Jean Finlayson's list (26/07/2012) gives the name Meal na Caraiche Duibhe, a name confirmed by Duncan Murchison, 24th October 2012. He described this as a distinctive hill overlooking the township of Culduie. Mr Murchison also said that the original name of the township was A' Chathair Dhubh, the black settlement, rather than Cùil Dubh a' Chille which has been suggested in the writings of Kenneth Macrae, F.S.A. Scot.,
