Placename

Gaelic name: Loch Urrabroc

Name in Original Source: Loch Urrabroc

English meaning: Loch Urrabroc

Placename feature: Loch

Notes: A name which is much debated. The hill above it is listed on some Ordnance Survey maps as Meall Ùr a' Bhorraich, meaning something like 'hill of the fresh mountain grass'. Others (Roderick Gillanders, interviewed by the Scottish Place Name Survey in May 1971) that Urrabroc may have been the name of the giant who is commemorated in the name Eas an Fhamhair(q.v.)

This loch was home to a 'each-uisge' when Rhoda Cameron was young, and before that, too: 'That's the nannies we had in those days ... ghosts and spooks.'

This was probably a story to keep the children away from it, as the banks were treacherously weak, having been undermined by the burn flowing from it. Any weight would have seen the bank collapse. (Source - Rhoda Cameron - 27/12/2000)
