Placename

Gaelic name: Langail

Name in Original Source: Langail

English meaning: Long field

Placename feature: Field

Notes: In current usage, it is almost always rendered as Langwell, it is generally pronounced Line-gal by local Gaelic speakers. This is believed to be a Norse name. It was applied to an area of fine arable ground south-east of Boradal, and south of (and virtually adjacent to) Ach' a' Choirce (q.v.). There appears to be a significant settlement situated there just at the top of a very steep field on an Applecross Estate map of c.1810 (at least 23 buildings are marked). See also Pairc Langail. Kenneth Macrae, F.S.A.: LONGOLL. This is a Norse name, still used. This place was incorporated in the farm, partly arable and partly outrun. The sites of the houses of the evicted tenants can still be seen.
