Placename

Gaelic name: Loch an Àirigh

Name in Original Source: Loch an Àirigh

English meaning: Loch of the shieling

Placename feature: Loch

Notes: Loch an Àirigh is full of reeds and had a lot of waterlilies. It was formerly a good fishing loch, but the vegetation hinders fishing now. This loch is situated just off the south end the loch called Loch an Uaimhby locals (Loch nan Uaigheanby the Ordnance Survey) [Grammatically, it should be Loch na h-Àirighe but this doesn't appear to be the normalised pronunciation in the Applecross dialect. A gulley running north-west to south-east links this loch and Loch nan Slochd (q.v.). According to Donald Cameron, the east-facing slope between the two lochs is very rough, rocky ground and was (during his experience of going to the lochs fishing) where adders were very commonly seen [Information from Donald Cameron, 17 October 2012]
