Placename
Gaelic name: Goirteanan Staingeach
Name in Original Source: Goirteanan Steingeach
English meaning: Corn-field of the ditches
Placename feature: Field
Notes: Further to right (south) of Slochd nearer Fang-a-Dols. [The original spelling is hard to decipher in Dr Alexander K. Gillies' list compiled for the Applecross Historical Society, date unknown] According to Duncan Murchison, 24th October 2012, Duchan Dhànaidh (the late Duncan MacBeath) said Ali an Uibhistich called the green areas marked at these co-ordinates Goirteanan Staingach. This arable patch lies outside the current stone dyke, i.e. in the hill ground, but an aerial image shows that there was certainly a wall or dyke around its south side. Staingeach could mean that the goirteanabounded in ditches or drains, or sharp stones. Folk etymology suggests that a goirtean may only have been used in times of real scarcity or need, which has some logic as these patches often lie away from township inby land; and that the element staingeach is read as meaning that one would be ... ann an staing, in dire straits if one was using a goirtean at all
