Placename

Gaelic name: Lagan na Comraich

Name in Original Source: Lagan na Comraich

English meaning: Little hollow of the sanctuary

Placename feature: Monastic settlement?

Notes: Generally, this name applies to the area at the north end, and on the right-hand side, of the road which runs between Ceann na h-Athan and the boundary wall separating An Fhaoilinn from the shore. It is praised in a song by Applecross bard John MacKenzie of c1903

W. J. Watson's notes: 203: The holy well by the roadside, west of Applecross House, is unfortunately nameless. Near it are the four trees in the form of an oblong, which, with a (supposed) crab-apple tree in the centre, were absurdly propounded as the origin of the name Applecross. This is the supposed site of Malruba's cell, and is called Lagan na Comraich, the little hollow of the sanctuary.
