Placename

Gaelic name: Càrnaich [A' Chàrnaich]

Name in Original Source: A' Chàrnaich

English meaning: Cairn place/Place of cairns

Placename feature: Woodland

Notes: Nowadays referred to as Carnach or even Carnach Woodland, this was a pasture area. The cairns are presumably clearance cairns, although another possible derivation is The stony place suggesting an area that was already stony ground to begin with. It appears as a wooded pasture on William Roy's military map of the post-Culloden period.
