Placename

Gaelic name: Boradal

Name in Original Source: Mains of Applecross

English meaning: Fort dale

Placename feature: Farm

Notes: This name refers to the area around what is known today as the Applecross Farm. The original Boradal, as suggested by W.J. Watson, relates to the broch which once stood on a small hillock overlooking the site.

W. J. Watson's notes: 204: Applecross Mains - Of old Borrodale, from N. Borgr, a burg or stronghold, and dalr, a dale; 'Fort-dale'; Gaelic curiously accents the second syllable, which suggests that some third element, e.g. á, river, has to be reckoned with.
